The Indianapolis Colts could be spenders in free agency during the 2021 offseason so we will be profiling several potential targets at positions of need. Adding to the wide receiver position will be vital for the Colts this offseason even if they retain veteran T.Y. Hilton, who is set to be a free agent in March.

Every year, expectations are given at a team level, position level all the way down to the player-specific level. This was no different for the Indianapolis Colts during the 2020 season.

While expectations can vary depending on one’s outlook of a player, there is a general sense of those who overachieved and those who underachieved in any given campaign.’

Here are four players who exceeded expectations for the Colts in 2020:

1 CB Xavier Rhodes

Probably the easiest player to name for this list. Rhodes was brought in on a one-year deal to replace Pierre Desir, who was released in order to make room for the former. It was a risky move considering the level of play Rhodes showed in 2019.

But that move paid off big time for the Colts. Rhodes enjoyed an incredibly strong bounce-back season manning the secondary for Indy, especially at a time when the depth was pretty thin. Rhodes became the CB1 on the boundary quickly and proved he was well worth the investment on a one-year deal.

On 80 targets, Rhodes allowed a 51.3% completion rate and a 78.3 passer rating, per Pro Football Focus in 2020.

2 S Julian Blackmon

Despite tearing his ACL in December 2019, Blackmon was on the field making a major impact by Week 3 when Malik Hooker suffered an unfortunate Achilles injury. Blackmon stepped in right away and made big plays to help the Colts win early in the season.

Blackmon’s season tailed off a bit toward the end during the second half. He had some issues with angles and missed tackles, but what he showed during the first half of the season proves the Colts have a promising piece in the secondary next to Khari Willis.

3 RT Braden Smith

Imagn Database

This is a bit interesting because Smith was a player we had tabbed (like many) as a breakout candidate in 2020. He had been ascending over the last two seasons as the right tackle, and it seemed like this was the year he would make the jump into another tier.

He did just that. Smith was an anchor on the right side of the line both in pass protection and when it came to moving people in the run game. His technique is becoming more consistent and it led to him not allowing a sack on 578 pass-blocking snaps, per Pro Football Focus. On top of that, he allowed just one quarterback hit throughout the entire season.

Smith will be coming up on a contract extension soon and with the way he has been playing, its going to be a nice one.

4 S George Odum

AP Photo/AJ Mast

Odum has quietly been an important part of the roster since he earned a spot in 2018 as an undrafted rookie. Though his role on the defense has been more in the reserve capacity, Odum’s presence on special teams has been incredible.

The latter part of his game finally took a step forward in 2020 as he was named a First-Team All-Pro for his efforts on special teams. Though he snubbed a Pro Bowl selection, getting the nod from the Associated Press and the PFWA on their All-NFL team means more.

Odum exceeded expectations for his work on special teams. We knew he was impactful in that phase of the game but he turned out to be an elite talent during the 2020 season.

Colts at Steelers: Game notes

The Steelers hit rock bottom last Monday night, losing at the last-place Cincinnati Bengals 27-17. Previously, they lost back-to-back games to the Washington Football Team and Buffalo Bills, two teams technically in first place in their respective divisions. It was alarming after an 11-0 start but still not the end of the world. A 10-point loss in Cincinnati against the cellar-dwelling Bengals in front of a national audience was not a good look.Pittsburgh posted an 8-3 ATS mark across the first 11 games, all victories, but it has failed to cover in each of its last three games during the 0-3 SU skid. The Steelers have had a power outage on offense, averaging just 16.3 PPG during the three-game slide. The Colts picked up a 27-20 victory against the Houston Texans, narrowly missing a cover as 7.5-point favorites. They enter on a three-game win streak, averaging 32.3 PPG while yielding just 22.3 PPG. This will be Indy’s fourth game against an AFC North team – it is 1-2 SU/0-3 ATS in those contests.Indianapolis ranks ninth in the NFL with 260.8 passing yards per game, and it is also ninth in the league with 28.5 PPG. Defensively it has been very good, ranking seventh with 334.1 total YPG allowed, and just 98.1 rushing YPG. It is allowing just 22.9 PPG to rank 11th.The Steelers allowed just 11.5 PPG in four wins from Week 9 through 12, but they have coughed up 25.3 PPG during their three-game losing skid.

Money line (?)

The COLTS (-105) are worth playing straight-up. Until the struggling Steelers can pull out of their nosedive, you need to continue to fade them. They’re showing no signs of doing so, and things are actually getting worse.

Against the spread (?)

Indianapolis Colts Betting Line

The COLTS +1 (-115) haven’t covered in three straight outings since Week 2 through 4, and they have yet to piece together a four-game win streak this season. But they’re the play here, as the Steelers are ice cold and showing no signs of life on offense recently. Indy is also 4-0 ATS in its past four on the road and 15-6 ATS in the past 21 against winning teams.

While Indy is just 1-4 ATS in the past five trips to Pittsburgh and 1-4 ATS in the past five in this series, a lot of the personnel has changed from those previous outings and there’s not much to glean from those trends. The in-season trends are the ones to lean upon more.

Indianapolis Colts Betting Line

Over/Under (?)

OVER 42.5 (-115) is worth a small-unit play. Again, the series trends suggest an Over, going 4-0 in the past four meetings in Pittsburgh. But again, the teams have turned over their rosters plenty since the most recent meeting. More importantly, the Over is 7-3 in Indy’s past 10 games this season, and 9-3 in its past 12 as a road favorite while cashing in four straight against winning sides.
